Major improvements planned for Theale Station

A successful "Access for All" bid to provide disabled access to Theale Station was announced several months ago. Now, successful bids to the "Local Sustainable Transport Fund" and "National Station Improvement Programme" fund have meant that further improvements can be made. The plans are for:
  • A new footbridge, with new stairs from the car park and and Newbury-bound platform. Lack of space means that there will probably not be stairs from this bridge to the Reading-bound platform
  • Lifts from the car park and serving the two permanent platforms. It has not yet been decided whether the temporary platform on the freight loop line will become permanent
  • A new two-window booking office. This will probably be a "modular" building
  • Public toilets.
The new bridge and lifts will be at the Reading end of the station.

It is hoped that these improvements will be provided by next summer.

The "fly in the ointment" is that the lifts will probably only be operational while the station is manned and First Great Western have not committed to extend the time that that the booking office is open.
