Sainsburys taking IKEA Calcot planning permission to judicial review

Sainsburys are taking the planning permission granted by West Berkshire Council for the proposed IKEA store at Calcot to judicial review.

Sainsburys had expressed concerns to the council about the extra traffic generated by IKEA causing traffic to back up into the Sainsburys car park. They had asked for detectors to be placed in their car park exit. If these detectors detected traffic backing up, Sainsburys wanted the detectors to change the traffic light phasing to clear their car park. Modelling by the council's highways department showed that this would cause unacceptable delays on the A4. The council therefore refused Sainsburys request and it was not included in the plans that were approved.

If Sainsburys wins the judicial review then it is likely to put the whole IKEA plan back in the melting pot.
