Letter to press re proposed cut of West Berks Council Duke of Edinburgh Award funding

Dear Editor,
in May, 576 young people from West Berkshire received Duke of Edinburgh Awards (D of E). At the time, West Berkshire’s Executive Councillor for Culture was quoted as saying "It is not just the individual that benefits from the D of E experience. D of E participants’ voluntary work nationally is worth over £136,578.26 a year to local communities."
It is therefore both perverse and counter productive for West Berkshire Council to propose to cut its funding for the award entirely. Not only will local young people lose the opportunity to meet big challenges, but the community will lose out too.
Kind Regards,
Alan Macro
Councillor for Theale
West Berkshire Council
