New footbridge and lifts at Theale Station finally gets go-ahead

There has been a cloud over the project to build a new footbridge with lifts at Theale Station. Although this was previously approved, the tenders came in over budget. The project had to go back to the Department for Transport to approve the increased cost. This was of great concern because access to the platforms at Theale station is so difficult for anyone who has difficulty climbing stairs or with prams or pushchairs. Added to that, the new station building has been sited close to where the lifts are planned, well away from the existing stairs.

Baroness Kramer, the Lib-Dem Rail Minister, today approved "Access for All" projects at 42 stations, including the lifts and bridge at Theale. Her announcement can be viewed here.

I do not yet have timescales for the project, but I will be attending a meeting with Great Western Trains and Network Rail at the end of the month.
