Pleased to see Thames Water have re-opened Church Street footway

Thames Water moved quickly in answer to my request to re-open the footway in Church Street. They had closed it to protect the hose they had put in between the temporary pump installed at the Lambfields pumping station and a manhole in the road.

They have now put a tarmac ramp over the hose and re-opened the path.

Asked Thames Water to avoid closure of Church Street footway

I sent the following email to various people at Thames Water this evening:

Thank you for installing the temporary pump at this location. This appears to be coping with the flow and seems to have reduced the noise nuisance. It has also removed the disturbance at night caused by the flashing warning nights.
However, about 25-30 metres of the footway has been completely closed off by protective fencing. We have already seen people walking in the road to avoid the closure. There are likely to be big problems when the schools return after the Christmas holidays. The site is very close to Theale Green School and many pupils use this stretch of footway. Although the protective fencing closes off 25-30 metres of footway, the only obstruction that needs to be protected is the hose that crosses the footway outside the pumping station and then runs down the gutter. The hose is about 30 cm in diameter. I would be grateful if you could investigate whether the hose could instead be protected by a temporary ramp (or similar) and the protective fencing removed.
I would also be grateful if you could inform me of plans to permanently solve the problem.

And I received the following reply from Richard Alyard of Thames Water:

Thank you for letting us know that the temporary pump has eased the situation. But I very much take the point about the footway and am sure we can get this sorted out well before the children return to school. I will be in the office tomorrow and will get back to you and Alok Sharma with information about this and the longer term plans to resolve the situation.
